Incredible!! A rare textbook that does not depend on a competent teacher

I picked up this book just as a supplement before my freshman year in high school, and it ended up leading my entire geometry honors education, way ahead of my teacher and my school-assigned textbook. In the last 7 years, I have not had a textbook that teaches math in such a logical, clear, and light-hearted way, while maintaining the discipline and rigor of a formal mathematics training.

I am now a senior in college, and have taken several rigorous mathematics courses in Analysis, Multivariate Calculus, and Linear Algebra, and the experience of self-studying from this textbook still stays with me. Before I learned from this book, I thought I was completely unskilled and incompetent at math, and quite frankly, math scared me. I realized later that student achievement in math is highly dependent on both a great textbook and great instruction, and not some mystical "math gene". I want to thank Harold R. Jacobs for writing math the way it should be done; if math were taught like this in all our public schools, it would truly revolutionize U.S. education in math and science. It puts an important emphasis at understanding the basics of proofs and geometry, to the point where you can relate it to logical phenomenons in your everyday life... to a point where it becomes second nature and just not another theory to memorize. This is a very Eastern method of math education, prevalent in Chinese and Russian classrooms, which may be what U.S. education reform needs. It is an incredibly powerful way to educate math. When the fundamentals are mastered at a deep level, the book challenges you to a wide variety of problems, which instead of being daunting (which is the norm for a math course), they are incredibly satisfying to solve. This book actually teaches thinking and logic, not just material.

AS A COMPARISON TEXTBOOK: Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge by Richard Rhoad, George Milauskas and Robert Whipple was the was assigned for my geometry honors class, and it is incomparable to Harold's book. Geometry for Enjoyment used proofs that were incredibly circuitous that I often wondered if the authors purposely lengthened the lines of their proofs just to add more pages to their book. My dad (a former math professor) and I caught a couple logical errors or typos in Geometry for Enjoyment that should not have been made by the authors. 3 weeks into my Geometry Honors class I stopped even looking at their solutions to geometry proofs, because once they reached proofs of moderate or advanced level, 90% of the time the steps were roundabout and overdone, to the point of illogical. Instead, I would reference Jacobs's textbook for proofs to similar problems.

The same proof in Jacobs's textbook took half the amount of steps, and used the most logical and powerful path, which really are quite beautiful in comparison to the textbook the high school assigned to me. Occams razor exists as profound philosophy in science & math for a reason, and Jacobs embodies that!

Another great thing about Harold's textbook is that it has very light-hearted and entertaining application problems. One segment that I love is in the beginning, there is an illustration of the Mad Hatter and his friends having tea with Alice, commenting on how it's an incredible logical fallacy "to say what you mean" with "to mean with you say." I've forgotten the entire quote, but it was very entertaining. Most high school math textbooks have application problems about climbing ladders and filling concrete in some giant cylindrical container, or some other oversimplified version of an industrial building project. What high school-er finds that fun?? I would much rather solve problems about Euclid in comic-form or of Alice venturing in wonderland. Basic geometry is incredibly abstract, so it only makes sense to apply it in a profoundly simple and fantastic setting.

If I ever teach geometry in the future, this is my textbook of choice! The best for self-study and classroom education!

Taught Classes With it Several Times, Fabulous for Home-Schoolers

As the other reviews show...this book is not only lucid and brilliant, but quite accessible. I've taught classes with it starting in Jr. High with gifted youngsters and with homeschoolers starting in the 6th grade.
I regularly recommend this book to homeschool moms because it is not intimidating, and they invariably enjoy it.
Also, this is PURE geometry, untainted by algebra. Probably the first and only time most students have to learn logic and the structure of argument.
A no brainer. This is the best geometry book I've ever seen, hands down.

Lilith Starr is the founding Chapter Head of the Satanic Temple's Seattle Chapter. She holds a Harvard B.A. in English and a Stanford M.A. in Journalism. For 18 years, she fought addiction, trying to get sober in 12-step programs without success. Finding Satanism finally allowed her to beat addiction for good and make a full recovery. I love this book! It has made such a huge difference in my life. The author has experienced many of the things I have experienced. So the book speaks to me on a very personal level. The fact that the author also belongs to TST is an added bonus. I greatly admire TST and the work that they do, fighting for our freedom to live without having religion shoved down our throats.

A Wonderful Story That Conveys Valuable Lessons ...

LeUyen Pham’s “A Piece of Cake” is a treat for your little ones – and for the individual reading aloud to that audience. Not only is this charming story beautifully illustrated, it also has some good messages about generosity, respecting the feelings of others, and about using ingenuity to solve problems.

Mouse, a thoughtful but naïve friend, bakes a birthday cake to take to his friend Little Bird. Along the way, he trades away portions of the cake for “indispensible” items, but that he feels Little Bird may not need. Of course, by the time he reaches Little Bird the cake is gone. Rather than being unhappy with the loss of his cake, Little Bird comforts kind-hearted Mouse and the two make their way back to Mouse’s home. Along the way, they encounter the various animals with whom Mouse traded; each one has a problem that Mouse cleverly solves using items Mouse has acquired. In the end, everyone benefits from the kindness of Mouse and the ingenuity of Little Bird.

“A Piece of Cake” is illustrated with charming, colorful child-like, but not childish, illustrations. The pictures have depth and perspective that is no longer commonplace; the illustrations do not have a digital feel. Individuals who are old enough to remember the classic Golden Books may see the resemblance to those books’ illustrations. LeUyen Pham has created pictures that are fun to see and enhance “A Piece of Cake”.

Children will like this book because of its birthday cake focus. However, it conveys some excellent messages and points of discussion to which little ones may relate. One aspect of “A Piece of Cake” that I particularly like is the respect the characters show for one another’s feelings. I liked the ingenuity Little Bird used in solving the problem and the generosity he showed to the animals that “deceived” the kind-hearted Mouse. Little Bird’s example of working through a problem rather than becoming angry when you are disappointed is a good one.

A Big Golden Book

Author-illustrator LeUyen Pham has a soft spot for the good old days. She has created a picture book which is a throwback to the Little Golden Books of the mid-20th century. The byline script on the front cover and gold-bordered title are nice nods.

Pham's digitally-colored characters have an animated feel about them. No surprise, she worked in animation at DreamWorks. Mouse's expression recalls Hermey (aka Herbie) from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, here aptly in its Golden Book form.

A Piece of Cake is appealing even if it is at its roots derivative. There is much enjoyment to be had by the creative retelling of classic stories. Fractured fairy tales are some of the bestsellers in children's books nowadays. Here, the progression of animal encounters through an ingredient-laced storyline obviously recalls The Little Red Hen, that classic folk tale and incidentally one of the original twelve Little Golden Books.

This new story manages to retain its own character, however, by deviating in order to create learning opportunities for young readers: How to think outside the box. How to avoid being taken advantage of. Unlike her inspiration, which functions solely as a tough love fable, LeUyen Pham's new book is instructive yet inclusive. Chicken, Squirrel, Bear, and Cow may or may not have been trying to screw Mouse out of the cake--depending on how you interpret the story--but they all get along in the end, thanks to smart thinking and teamwork. The knowing smile shared by Mouse and Little Bird after their first coup (repeated on the back cover) is wonderful.

Most refreshing of all may be the unexpected ways in which (the very clever indeed) Little Bird manages to trade back the unwanted inventory for cake ingredients. In each such spread, the expected item is presented visually to the trading partner (and to the reader), yet the item actually exchanged is different. The baby book Millie Moo offered such bait-and-switch susprises, though not within a linear storyline.

We have continued to find new details on re-readings. Like when Mouse and Little Bird are retrieving ingredients, Mouse collects flowers from each location to make a bouquet for Little Bird at the story's conclusion. Ultimately, this is a refreshing and well-illustrated book which demonstrates that two friends can make the most of any situation.

Small digital printing glitch on the page with Chicken's dropped cake. Blank endpapers are a shade of turquoise which does not complement the sky blue covers.

Delightful story and illustrations

The story is about a mouse who makes a special cake for Little Bird’s birthday. On his way to deliver the cake, the mouse encounters many other animals who are interested in trading different items for a piece of that special cake. The mouse is a kind mouse who agrees to all the trades but then is left with no cake for Little Bird. The story then goes in reverse as Little Bird and the mouse go to all the ones who traded items for a piece of cake. This time, the mouse trades the items he received along the way to get more ingredients from each animal to make another cake.

The language used is simple and easy to understand yet tells a story that is different and delightful for young children. The illustrations are colorful and support the story line very well.

Good values for young children to learn are demonstrated in the story. The kindness of the mouse is shown in each trade he makes along with his strong friendship with Little Bird for making the cake and trying to deliver it to him. Little Bird and the mouse also employ creative solutions to gain more ingredients to make another cake and have a birthday party with all the animals.

The story reminds me of a win-win situation since all the characters benefit from the trades based on the mouse’s kindness to all the animals on his way to Little Bird’s home and back. The book is also a win-win for the delightful story and wonderful illustrations.

Not her best work

The Leaning Tower is a collection of short stories and novellas by Katherine Anne Porter. It was originally published in 1934, sandwiched chronologically between her two other collections of short fiction, Flowering Judas and Pale Horse, Pale Rider. Compared to those excellent books, The Leaning Tower is a bit of a disappointment. While Porter's prodigious ability to craft realistic settings and render psychologically authentic characters is evidently on display here, the selections tend to be too heavy on description and too light on plot.

The opening novella, "The Old Order," is composed of a series of chronologically jumbled vignettes in the life of a family in rural Texas, told from the third person perspective of Miranda, presumably the same Miranda featured in Porter's stories "Old Mortality" and "Pale Horse, Pale Rider". Miranda recounts memories from her childhood, concerning in particular her grandmother and the family's black servants. The insights into black/white relations in the changing American South are fascinating, but too much attention is devoted to the imperious grandmother, who treats everyone as a servant, whether black or white, old or young.

This is followed by the short story "The Downward Path to Wisdom," told from the point of view of a young boy about five years old. It feels a bit pointless, as if the story's sole purpose is for Porter to prove she can write from this unusual perspective. In "Holiday," a young city woman decides to spend her spring vacation living with a large farming family in East Texas. There she develops a friendship of sorts with the family's crippled servant, who carries a dark secret. The story finishes well, but the first two-thirds is spent merely describing in detail the daily life of the family, at times from an overly critical, condescending perspective. The best selection in the book by far is "A Day's Work." The Hallorans are an Irish couple in New York whose marriage has devolved into hatred. The husband, unemployed, blames his wife for missed opportunities, while she views herself as a martyr to his sins. It is an excellent story until the final paragraph, in which one character behaves in a manner which seems to be a complete reversal of everything that came before.

The collection ends with its longest piece, the title novella "The Leaning Tower." Charles Upton, an aspiring painter, lives out a childhood dream by traveling to Berlin, but ultimately finds Germany a disappointing destination. Porter's depiction of Berlin is about as flattering as a George Grosz cartoon. There is much dwelling upon the myriad ways in which Germany sucks, its people are ugly and rude, etc. The story provides a vivid glimpse into the atmosphere and mindset of a nation licking its wounds from one disgraceful World War while lurching towards another. Once again, however, there's just too much description and not enough action. When things finally start happening to Charles, it's too little, too late.

Katherine Anne Porter is one of the best American short story writers of the 20th century, and her brilliant talents do shine forth at moments here and there among these selections, but the entries here never rival masterpieces like "Flowering Judas," "The Cracked Looking-Glass," or "Noon Wine." Flowering Judas and Pale Horse, Pale Rider are much better collections of her work, and should be given higher reading priority over The Leaning Tower.

These chapters also address the question of comity, meaning the circumstances in which a country would decline to exercise jurisdiction on the grounds that another state is the more appropriate jurisdiction. Finally, the extent of cooperation between the local government and other states is examined. In conducting cross-border business activity, these reports provide the reader with a sense of the multiple jurisdictions that a business must consider within the scope of how laws from various states interact and overlap. The countries covered include: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the EC, Israel, Japan, Singapore and the United States.

The second part of the book offers several proposals for effectively managing these overlapping competition policy regimes. Written by top academics and practitioners, the proposals render some of the most important current thinking on the topic.

The country reports and the expert policy proposals together provide a unique perspective on international competition policy and the challenges of the international competition policy regime.

About the Author

Andrew T. Guzman is Professor of Law, Director of the Advanced Law Degree Programs, and Associate Dean for International and Executive Education at Berkeley Law School, University of California, Berkeley. Professor Guzman holds a J.D. and Ph.D. (economics) from Harvard University. He has written extensively on international trade, international competition policy, international regulatory matters, foreign direct investment and public international law. He is the author of How International Law Works from Oxford University Press and International Trade Law (with Joost Pauwelyn) from Wolters Kluwer and co-editor of the Research Handbook of International Economic Law (with Alan Sykes) from Edward Elgar. Professor Guzman is on the board of editors of several academic journals and is a member of the Academic Council of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration.
