Amazon.com Review
Teilhard de Chardin, a 20th-century Jesuit priest and paleontologist, is a favorite theologian of contemporary notables such as Al Gore, Mario Cuomo, Marshall McCluhan, and cyberguru John Perry Barlow. Cuomo has said, "Teilhard made negativism a sin. He taught us how the whole universe--even pain and imperfection--is sacred." Ursula King, in Spirit of Fire: The Life and Vision of Teilhard de Chardin, has written an accessible, entertaining, and lavishly illustrated biography of Teilhard. His writings were all but ignored during his lifetime, but now serve as a lifeline for people of faith struggling to define divine imperatives for ecological responsibility and technological engagement.

About the Author
Ursula King is Professor Emerita and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol.

Before you read the works of Chardin, read this!
By A Customer
This is a fine introduction to the prolific life and writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the most important theologian of the 20th century. Chardin's theology, banned for years by the Vatican, was at least a hundred years ahead of it's time. A geologist, palenthologist, mystic, spiritual lover, he proposed that Darwin's theories of evolution were not contrary to God's revelation but actually was Revelation.
King's book does a good job of detailing Chardin's life, his passions, his pursuits, his beliefs and his science. Though dry and slow at times, the author does help to illuminate the theology of someone who isn't easy to read. Though he lived a rich life, Chardin's writing can be somewhat cold and too scientific at times for the layreader to understand. This book, however, is good solid primer and should be the starting point for anyone interested in a man ahead of his time.

The Universe And Mankind Are Both Evolving Towards Perfection
By Peter Kenney
Ursula King's biography of Teihard de Chardin is a fascinating book written in a style which makes a difficult subject seem quite understandable. King weaves the story of Teihard's life around snapshots of his constantly maturing vision of God, the universe and mankind.

Known for his original concepts such as the ongoing evolution of both the universe and mankind towards perfection and the existence of a global network of self-awareness, Teihard was always regarded as a loose canon by the Vatican. Consequently, not much of his work was released during his lifetime except for those relatively few items which were privately published and distributed among a circle of his friends. Since his death in 1955 all his books and essays have been made available to the general public. Teihard nurtured close, supportive relationships with a small number of caring females and left many letters which reveal the importance of these women in his life.

Although at times he is difficult to comprehend, there is no doubt that Teihard ranks as one of the most prominent thinkers of the twentieth century. The fact that he is recognized as a famous and respected scientist as well as a mystic, greatly increases his significance.

Excellent Introduction to a Life
By Timothy J. Gannon
Fr. Chardin is someone who has touched my heart deeply from the time I first heard about him many years ago. I was fascinated by the few things I heard about his philosophy and theology. I also hear a lot of new-age citations of him that sound like foolishness. His only work that I read with understanding was "Mass on the World." This short piece was a window into a beautiful soul. Ms. King's work is a sweeping and breathtaking panorama of his life and thought. Her observations are well documented with quotes and pictures of his life and works. I am particularly impressed with how she honors his fidelity to the church's magisterium and his vows.
I read this book in three segments. I had to pause to absorb the magnitude of what I read and experienced. The first part was his early life ending with his service in WWI. I remain astounded at his bravery and his complete experience of all the most horrible battles of that war. I do wish the author had made clearer what bored him about the study of Thomas Aquinas. Was he reading poor presentations of Thomas' thought or what problem did he see in Thomas. At his time in Fr. Chardin's life, Thomas was being resurrected by fellow jesuits, one of them, Henri de Lubac, was a close friend. Also J. Maritan and E. Gilson were active. The second segment was his life's work and exile to China. I remain amazed at the energy he gave to science and writing. A powerful mind was at work to make sense of what he learned. I was exhaused reading of his exploits. The third segment was his closing years and his infirmimity. This was a prayerful reading. I was especially touched by his words to a friend, "I always feel God's presence now." The only shortfall I'm seeing in Fr. Chardin's life work is how to get where he saw the need to go. How to learn how I can best make Christ present. Too many new-agers have co-opted Fr. Chardin to make us think we can pull ourselves up by the bootstraps to evolve to the next age. All evolution is in God's Providence.
This book really brought Fr. Chardin to life and helped me understand his meaning and message. Another title that brought Fr. Chardin to life is "For the Time Being" by Annie Dillard. Read and Enjoy.

Pimpernel, by Sheralyn Pratt

For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere. Some want to kill him, others want to hire him, but Jack Cavanaugh knows that the love/hate relationship comes with the job title.

At present, Jack is trying to dismantle an investment scheme centered in Las Vegas, but "trying" is the operative word. It's been a month since he put the face of the scheme behind bars, yet the scam is still going strong. As Jack tries to uncover who has stepped in as the new head, what miniscule evidence there is all seems to point him back to Claire Ramsey, an introverted PhD student studying at UNLV.

If ever there as an unlikely head of an investment scheme, Claire's it. She has a genius IQ, but from all Jack has seen, Claire’s intelligence is as much a blessing as a curse when paired up with her acute OCD. Claire can barely make conversation with the cute guy down the hall, which makes it hard to believe she could be the charismatic salesperson who is getting international businessmen to invest $5—50 million a pop.

So what is Jack missing? What is the real story behind Claire Ramsey? And once Jack learns it, will he be able to walk away?

I'm Obsessing Over This Book
By Jessie C
So much intrigue, and a touch of romance. This book read like a movie to me. A touch of Ocean's Eleven, Mission Impossible, and the misdirection of Now You See Me. I loved the fast pace, the technology, and the disguises. It really would come to life on the screen.
The characters were well developed, especially Claire. I really felt like I understood her, and the way she saw the world.
The Pimpernel does stand alone, but I would love it if this became the start of this series. There is so much more potential for intrigue.

Content: clean (no language, some kissing, mention of infidelity-not the hero or heroine)

This could be a movie!
By DMP
Note: I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review.

I decided to read this book because I liked a previous work from the author. But, wow, am I doubly glad I agreed to read this! Yes, I liked the author's other book, but she totally blew me away with this one. This book reads like a James Bond story. I could easily see this made into a movie.

The plot is based on the classic book by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, the Scarlet Pimpernel. But, unlike many retellings of historical classics, this one is a winner.

In this story, the reader first meets Claire, a genius and PhD candidate at UNLV. She has been manipulated to help in a criminal investment scam because of her OCD and genius abilities to read expressions and remember details.

The next character we meet is Jack. He's in town to shut down the scam and see that the guilty party behind it is arrested. However, he believes that Claire is somehow innocent in her involvement - that she's otherwise a good person. We're also introduced to several others that Jack works with and who are is "street team." He lives in a shadowy world of trust, illusion, and impersonations. However, even he is not prepared for his reaction to Claire.

What follows is an incredible tale of intrigue, magic, who-done-it, and, yes, romance that will leave you on the edge of your seat. And, finally, the next best thing to finishing this great story is that the author plans to write more on these same characters!

Romance - PG - kissing
Language - PG / clean

My rating - 5 stars

Sign me up for Book II!
By SallyBWT
Fans of the Scarlet Pimpernel, rejoice! We have a delightful, contemporary rehashing of that dashing daredevil and his mission to police the upper echelons of society! What if I told you that the Pimpernel's story didn't end in revolutionary France? It lived on, through his multitude of descendants, and exists in the present day. In today's modern world of corruption, social media, and technology, it takes a very different sort of Pimpernel to to keep watch on the 1% of the world's elite and wealthy.

Enter Jack, a handsome magician, with family and professional ties dating back centuries to the very first Pimpernel. Jack and his team are tasked with keeping the wealthy in check and preventing global financial catastrophes. As the book opens, Jack has his eye on Claire - a true genius and socially strained individual - who may or may not be performing one of the greatest global cons he has ever seen.

Claire, for her part, is desperate. She is desperate to finish her doctorate. Desperate to avoid dating the new guy down the hall. Desperately afraid of spiders, too. Add to that her OCD nature and conniving, social-climbing mother, and the girl already has it pretty rough. Oh, and then there's that other thing, that secret thing, she's doing that could very well destroy her life and the lives of the people she cares about. A mental breakdown is only seconds away.

This is a charming, fun story full of interesting information about magicians, facial tics, con artists, and romance. I found it way too short. And while there is a suspense/crime element to the story, I felt like it was a little underplayed - but I have an unhealthy admiration for con artists. Most readers who enjoy contemporary romance and detective TV shows will really like this. (Another reader likened it to the show Leverage.) The main characters are very interesting, with enough backstory given to make them worthy of compassion and character flaws/weaknesses that make them likeable. The secondary characters are also very intriguing and I am genuinely hoping that the author makes good on her promise in the last few pages to write a sequel. I'll read it!

The KAM Story: A Friendly Introduction to the Content, History, and Significance of Classical Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser Theory, by H.S. Duma

This is a semi-popular mathematics book aimed at a broad readership of mathematically literate scientists, especially mathematicians and physicists who are not experts in classical mechanics or KAM theory, and scientific-minded readers. Parts of the book should also appeal to less mathematically trained readers with an interest in the history or philosophy of science.

The scope of the book is broad: it not only describes KAM theory in some detail, but also presents its historical context (thus showing why it was a "breakthrough"). Also discussed are applications of KAM theory (especially to celestial mechanics and statistical mechanics) and the parts of mathematics and physics in which KAM theory resides (dynamical systems, classical mechanics, and Hamiltonian perturbation theory).

Although a number of sources on KAM theory are now available for experts, this book attempts to fill a long-standing gap at a more descriptive level. It stands out very clearly from existing publications on KAM theory because it leads the reader through an accessible account of the theory and places it in its proper context in mathematics, physics, and the history of science.

Readership: Undergraduates, graduates, and researchers broadly interested in Hamiltonian perturbation theory, statistical mechanics, ergodic theory, Nekhoroshev theory, Arnold diffusion, nonlinear dynamics, dynamical systems, chaos theory, classical mechanics, and the history of these subjects.

Review
"The mathematics is described in a very engaging style, with the focus being on 'ideas and motivation'. The narrative is developed through a historical description of the 'people side' of the struggles to achieve a deeper understanding of fundamental questions in dynamics. The book gives a very illuminating and inspiring account of how mathematical results are developed over time and across cultures in the broad context of the development of one of the great rigorous mathematical results of the last century — the KAM theorem." -- Prof Stephen Wiggins, University of Bristol

The more mathematical sections are handled in a clear and cool, professional style
By William Kirk
The author of The KAM Story, A Friendly Introduction to the Content, History, and Significance of Classical Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser Theory , H. Scott Dumas, has largely delivered on his title. This book is for those who have perhaps heard about “KAM theory”, or maybe even met the phrase “the celebrated KAM theorem” (a pet peeve of the author) in their studies or researches, and wondered what it was all about. The author himself would probably rather refer to it as K-A-M + Nekhoroshev (+Aubry-Mather) theory, to name but the most prominent contributors. In any case, with a perky prose style he presents us with what is a genuinely unbiased, even bemused, tour of the history of ergodic dynamics and the n-body problem, leading up to the 20th century and the eponymous heroes of the story, including the transitional figures Ludwig Boltzmann and especially Henri Poincare’. The more mathematical sections are handled in a clear and cool, professional style. Those whose interest have been piqued and who work in related areas will not have much difficulty, in fact even undergraduates, and, dare I say, talented high school students can slog through most of this material with help of an extensive glossary section at the end. One may otherwise have to refresh oneself on some concepts from (algebraic) topology, as well as one’s familiarity with classical (Lagrangian-Hamiltonian) mechanics. But KAM theory is in fact the more rigorous, mathematical side of the picture - the empirical, computer-driven aspects of stochastic dynamics as studied in e.g. engineering, astronomy, or biophysics is only tangentially related to the techniques and problems Professor Dumas discusses here. The role of ‘rigor’ in mathematics itself being, for the author, one of his many subsidiary themes.
The author laments the relative obscurity in America of KAM theory, even for those invested in dynamics and trajectories (practitioners in molecular dynamics, perhaps, or the large group of aficionados in ‘stochastic resonance theory’). His book aims to rectify that situation.
For those less professionally interested in the topic, however, the historical and indeed philosophical narratives he provides are excellent and engaging. Dumas even provides a useful, not altogether whimsical, set of ‘cartoon’ illustrations of the “meaning of KAM”. For both kinds of readers, he has given a long if not exhaustive bibliography of texts and articles for further reading.
Dumas takes rather extraordinary care to be fair to all sides. This is not a shortcoming: you may be convinced at the end that KAM theory deserves to be called celebrated, or you may agree with the author himself, that it is a “widely known (though partially understood)”, yet nonetheless beautiful development of 20th century mathematics.

Interesting for chemistry students
By Majored in Chemistry
I was a chemistry student in graduate school. One of the lectures my teacher gave was about methyl iodide, CH3I, or written as I-CH3. The question was whether the chemical bond between I and C will be broken, given some energy initially to the methyl group CH3. Although the problem was supposed to be treated quantum mechanically, chemists had always thought of a molecule as a group of coupled oscillators with energy flowing back and forth. Therefore, Newtonian (classical) mechanics was helpful in gaining physical intuition and even qualitative results. In the case of methyl iodide, I-C is an oscillator and CH3 is another oscillator. The two oscillators are interacting (coupled) with each other. Chemists attempted to answer the question whether an initially excited oscillator will quickly spread the energy out to its coupled oscillators or will keep the energy to itself for a long time.

That was the first time when I heard about KAM: If there is no excitation, each oscillator will make small amplitude oscillations and barely talk to each other. If the excitation of one oscillator is not strong and the frequency ratios between the oscillators are not rational numbers then it is possible that the motion of the oscillators will not been affected to the point that a chemical bond will get broken. We did many numerical studies, i.e., running classical trajectories with different initial conditions and take Poincare surfaces of intersection and found both integrable and non-integrable motions at the same total energy given. KAM had already known this nearly half a century ago through rigorous mathematics rather than numerical studies, which was absolutely amazing.

A typical chemistry text description of the ergodic hypothesis was for gas molecules in a box separated equally in 2 compartments the state of all molecules on one side and half number of molecules on each side are equally probable, just as all other possible numbers distributions between the two compartments. That is to say, given a time long enough each of the above state will show up pretty much equal number of times. However, in reality the two scenarios of all the molecules in one compartment and exactly half of the molecules in each compartment are rarely seen. The most probable states are those with APPROXIMATELY one-half number of molecules in each compartment. This is the so called “most probable distribution” which is what an observer sees during a reasonable period of experimental time. The way that “most probable distribution” works is based on our lack of knowledge of the interactions between the gas molecules in the box and it is often stated that it is “both impossible and unnecessary” to know the detailed interactions between the molecules. KAM points out that it is completely possible that if dynamical reasons exist (say there exist other constants of the motion in addition to the total energy) all the molecules could spend a long time in one-half of the box.

There are so many things to learn from Dumas book that I bring it with me in my humble backpack everyday to read it everywhere, especially on my subway and bus commutes. The mathematically oriented minds will have much fun from reading the book and others will also have great fun by skipping a few chapters and still get an overview of KAM. I worked through Chapters 2, 3, and 4 and have learned a lot of mathematics and I am sure that chemists will benefit from them as well as other chapters of the entire book.

The book is hard bound and World Scientific did a great job printing and binding it. This is perhaps one of the most pretty books of WS published in 2014, in content and in cosmetics.

The Seven Day Circle: The History and Meaning of the Week, by Eviatar Zerubavel

"Days, months, and years were given to us by nature, but we invented the week for ourselves. There is nothing inevitable about a seven-day cycle, or about any other kind of week; it represents an arbitrary rhythm imposed on our activities, unrelated to anything in the natural order. But where the week exists—and there have been many cultures where it doesn't—it is so deeply embedded in our experience that we hardly ever question its rightness, or think of it as an artificial convention; for most of us it is a matter of 'second nature.'

Moment of Battle: The Twenty Clashes That Changed the World, by Jim Lacey, Williamson Murray

Two modern masters of military history make their case for the twenty most pivotal battles of all time, in a riveting trip through the ages to those moments when the fate of the world hung in the balance.

In the grand tradition of Edward Creasy’s classic Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World, James Lacey and Williamson Murray spotlight only those engagements that changed the course of civilization. In gripping narrative accounts they bring these conflicts and eras to vivid life, detailing the cultural imperatives that led inexorably to the battlefield, the experiences of the common soldiers who fought and died, and the legendary commanders and statesmen who matched wits, will, and nerve for the highest possible stakes.

From the great clashes of antiquity to the high-tech wars of the twenty-first century, here are the stories of the twenty most consequential battles ever fought, including

• Marathon, where Greece’s “greatest generation” repelled Persian forces three times their numbers—and saved Western civilization in its infancy
• Adrianople, the death blow to a disintegrating Roman Empire
• Trafalgar, the epic naval victory that cemented a century of British supremacy over the globe
• Saratoga, the first truly American victory, won by united colonial militias, which ensured the ultimate triumph of the Revolution
• Midway, the ferocious World War II sea battle that broke the back of the Japanese navy
• Dien Bien Phu, the climactic confrontation between French imperial troops and Viet Minh rebels that led to American intervention in Vietnam and marked the rise of a new era of insurgent warfare
• Operation Peach, the perilous 2003 mission to secure a vital bridge over the Euphrates River that would open the way to Baghdad

Historians and armchair generals will argue forever about which battles have had the most direct impact on history. But there can be no doubt that these twenty are among those that set mankind on new trajectories. Each of these epochal campaigns is examined in its full historical, strategic, and tactical context—complete with edge-of-your-seat you-are-there battle re-creations. With an eye for the small detail as well as the bigger picture, Lacey and Murray identify the elements that bind these battles together: the key decisions, critical mistakes, and moments of crisis on which the fates of entire civilizations depended.

Some battles merely leave a field littered with the bodies of the fallen. Others transform the map of the entire world. Moment of Battle is history written with the immediacy of today’s news, a magisterial tour d’horizon that refreshes our understanding of those essential turning points where the future was decided.

A MAIN SELECTION OF THE HISTORY BOOK CLUB AND THE MILITARY BOOK CLUB

“Two world-class historians present, eloquently and persuasively, twenty battles that fundamentally changed the course of history. Moment of Battle is a must acquisition for anyone seeking to understand the nature of human development—and its turning points.”—Dennis E. Showalter, professor of history, Colorado College, author of Armor and Blood

“In a single volume, James Lacey and Williamson Murray have distilled a lifetime of learning and insight into the most influential battles in world history. This is a readable and compelling primer and a feast for the student of military history.”—James D. Hornfischer, author of Neptune’s Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal

From Booklist
Two distinguished military historians offer yet another (and undeniably successful) effort to update Sir Edward Creasy’s classic, TheFifteen Decisive Battles of the World (1908). The 20 battles range from classical antiquity (Marathon) to the Second Iraqi War, and each battle (or as with Vicksburg, campaign) is placed in its historical context, with economic and social factors added as relevant. The criterion for decisiveness—Would a different outcome have changed the world?—seems to be reasonable, and the actual battle narratives have notes for scholars and clarity for lay readers. The focus is definitely on Western history, and not all of the minor details are quite right (e.g., Nelson’s Victory did not have 50 32-pounders on each broadside), but literate narratives and balanced conclusions should attract a deservedly large readership. --Roland Green

“Moment of Battle is an exciting account of important battles in history from Marathon in 490 B.C. to Baghdad in 2003. Its authors are excellent military historians with personal experience in modern warfare and a command of the character of warfare throughout the ages. They write in clear and lively prose in a way that will capture the reader’s interest even as they communicate their own learning and excitement with the subject.”—Donald Kagan, Sterling Professor of Classics and History, Yale University

“Lacey and Murray have performed a signal service by reminding readers of the transcendent importance of major battles in shaping history. Readers can disagree with some of their selections, but that is part of the fun of a work like this: It makes you think even as it entertains and informs. This is an invaluable primer on military history.”—Max Boot, author of Invisible Armies: An Epic History of Guerrilla Warfare from Ancient Times to the Present

“The world’s greatest battles are common book themes; but Lacey and Murray offer two twists to the well-known genre. First, they focus on mostly unappreciated encounters such as Yarmuk, Vicksburg, Kursk, and Dien Bien Phu. Second, their accounts are not mere strategy and tactics, but human stories of the soldiers that won and lost these horrific battles. The result is a riveting human story about how 2,500 years of history were changed by a few remarkable individuals.”—Victor Davis Hanson, Senior Fellow, the Hoover Institution, author of Carnage and Culture and The Savior Generals

“Moment of Battle is a more than worthy successor to Sir Edward Creasey’s classic, The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World. It has extraordinary value because it accomplishes three things unusually well: It has a necessarily largely tactical (and operational) organizing idea and focus that is executed superbly; it is written with a strategic sense that is ever alert to the vital strategist’s question ‘So what?’; and it is accessibly written. It is a really good read.”—Professor Colin S. Gray, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Reading

“From Marathon to the Iraq War, Moment of Battle offers an unflinching account of the reality of conflicts that have shaped human history. Its wise and crisp chapters make ancient history fresh and put current events in perspective. This is a book for every student of military history to read and learn from.”—Barry Strauss, author of Masters of Command: Alexander, Hannibal, Caesar, and the Genius of Leadership

“At last, two eminent military historians have explained how the world’s most critical battles affected the course of civilization. Moment of Battle is a fresh, lively, and remarkable explanation about how the power of armies has shaped history.”—Bing West, co-author of Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War

“Undeniably successful . . . Literate narratives and balanced conclusions should attract a deservedly large readership.”—Booklist

“Will open interesting doors for casual readers and provide plenty of debate fodder for military-history buffs.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Engaging, well written, and thoroughly researched, this book will appeal to amateur and professional historians alike.”—Publishers Weekly

FROM ONE OF THE AUTHORS
By Historian
TO ALL REVIEWERS -- Thank you very much for your comments. I am very pleased that the overwhelming number of you appear to have really enjoyed the book. I am even more pleased that the almost everyone who gave MOMENT OF BATTLE less than four stars did so because of quibbles over our selection of battles, or over maps. That means that almost everyone enjoyed our writing and stories we told. --- This is very pleasing to both of us.

When we sat down to write this book my co-author and I discussed - with a minimum of threats and violence upon one another - one or two hundred battles before selecting the 20 we included. From the start we knew we would get beat up over our choices... there is just no way to make everyone happy. If we had done 50 battles, I am sure that we would have included all the ones our reviewers say we missed (maybe not Manzikert). Moreover, if we ever do a second volume, I think we will draw most of our selections from the Amazon reviews of Moment of Battle. We did actually consider making a list of 100 battles at the end, with a short explanation of why each did not make our final selection list. In retrospect, we should have done that.

Why no Asian, African, or South American Battles? For a number of reasons. For one, both authors are experts in Western military history, and was there is a natural tendency to play to our strengths. Next, we go into great depth describing historical backgrounds, as well as the battles themselves. The historical material necessary to do the same for many non-Western battles does not, unfortunately, exist in anything near the volume available to those researching Western battles. Moreover, this is a commercial publication... not an academic book (though we stand by our scholarship in each chapter), as such it is always wise to select battles that English speaking readers have an interest in.

As for maps. We both talk to a lot of persons who publish military history books, and the map issue upsets us all. For, we all love maps... richly detailed maps... for every phase of a fight. It really is impossible to have too many maps. Unfortunately, in almost all circumstances, maps are commissioned and paid for by the author. My co-author and I paid many thousands of dollars out of pocket for the almost two dozen maps in the book (authors pay for picture/photo rights also... many thousands more dollars). So, if all of you will just buy 50 or more copies of this book, and then hand them out as Christmas presents, we promise to commission more maps for our next book. In the meantime, given a choice between food, mortgages, and more maps... we were forced to opt for postponing starvation.

In closing... we really are grateful for the reviews posted here. We could not be happier that so many of you enjoyed the book. It helps us as we begin our next work - GODS OF WAR: WHEN GREAT CAPTAINS CLASH - we are sure that our selection of great captains will disappoint a few folks... but it is going to be a rousing read.

Popcorn for Newcomers to Military History
By Severian
No one really reads Creasey any more, but a need remains for newcomers to military history to have a good starting point that can set them on the road to learning about various periods and conflicts. Moment of Battle (hereafter MOB) is a good replacement for Creasey, at least for newcomers or single period specialists just branching out (e.g. you like WW2 and want to start to read about other eras). More experienced military lit buffs will find little new here, which is a mild disappointment given Murray's name on the cover. I loved "A War to Be Won" and expected the same "intermediate level" approach here, but the subject and / or the different co-author keeps things a bit more basic.

As can be predicted, some of the choices of battles are cliched. Midway, Normandy, Marathon, ho-hum. If you've ever read anything about these battles, you will find little new here. As might also be predicted, there are a few odd choices that fans of the various conflicts might disagree with: Vicksburg rather than Gettysburg, Trafalgar rather than Waterloo, Kursk rather than Stalingrad or Moscow. The authors do not make much of an effort to justify why one battle rather than another was selected, so its kind of take it or leave it as far as selection rationale goes. There are some inexplicable exclusions (Lepanto) and at least one inexplicable inclusion: "Operation Peach" in the Second Gulf (Iraq) War which seems to be in here solely because one of the authors fought in it. The Peach chapter goes on about how the Iraq War was probably significant one way or the other, triumph or failure, and then goes right into detail with no further analysis. With no disrespect at all intended for the brave soliders who fought in the Iraq conflict, I think it is far too premature to call the war or any battle in it the equivalent of a "clash that changed the world".

Some of the work herein is sloppy. Three battles lack maps, a big no-no. At least two other maps are abstract to the point of silliness (Adrianople and, inexcusably, Kursk). If the primary sources for the battle are limited, we get the same old same old (Marathon, Teutoberg Forest). And if the primary sources for the battle contain nonsensical folktales (Yarmuk), then these are trotted out as fact, with angry Muslim women first intimidating their menfolk into returning to battle and then facing down Byzantine troops themselves. Call me a skeptic, but I think this was just as likely to have happened as the angels at Mons... To call Yarmuk significant is fine, but just admit the historical sources are limited and discuss comparative Muslim / Byzantine tactics and strategy rather than bringing out the tall tales.

Some of the analysis is also a bit fast and loose. If the Romans had won in the Teutoborg Forest, would the 20th Century World Wars have really been averted? (As later Roman history itself shows, Latin cultures do not necessarily get on well with each other...) Would Napoleon or Hitler really have been able to invade England if Trafalgar or the Battle of Britain panned out differently? It seems sometimes that the writers are striving for drama as opposed to probity.

There also appear to be a few scholarly lapses. We have the "thoughts of the great general" trend mocked by Keegan in Face of Battle "Alexander must have thought xyz as he gazed out at the ranks of his cavalry". This isn't a Jeff Shaara novel, guys. We also have a denunciation of intellectual historians who minimize the destruction caused by Germanic raiders in the Roman Empire in the Adrianople chapter; it would be interesting to have a cite as to who these callous eggheads were / are, and it would also be interesting to hear some historical evidence rebutting their views. Instead, in the section notes, we get neither! We also have some odd colloquialisms like "The forces arrived higgledy piggledy" in the text.

These seem like a lot of criticisms, but it can also be seen that these critiques are from a military history fan perspective. If you are new to the field, or are branching out, this is a fun read and the faults are less obvious and meaningful. Grognards can always get this book by Paul Davis which has a greater number and variety of battles in it: 100 Decisive Battles: From Ancient Times to the Present and / or Hanson's meatier more ideological "Carnage and Culture" if they want some controversy in their great battle reading. If you are a relative newbie to the field, this is a good survey with decent intros to many great campaigns that gives you at least some idea as to what conflict in varying periods felt like. I would call this a three and a half star book, which I am rounding up due to the nice added campaign histories for many of the battles that give the novice a goodly amount of extra historical perspective.

Superb Update to Creasy
By James V. Di Crocco III
This is an outstanding work by two renowned military historians that updates Creasy's 19th century classic, "The Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World." Each of the battles described and dissected are well chosen and set in proper context. This work is highly recommended and should find a prominent place on the bookshelves of all military officers.

The Postmodern (The New Critical Idiom), by Simon Malpas

Simon Malpas investigates the theories and definitions of postmodernism and postmodernity, and explores their impact in such areas as identity, history, art, literature and culture. In attempting to map the different forms of the postmodern, and the contrasting experiences of postmodernity in the Western and developing worlds, he looks closely at:

* modernism and postmodernism
* modernity and postmodernity
* subjectivity
* history
* politics.

This useful guidebook will introduce students to a range of key thinkers who have sought to question the contemporary situation, and will enable readers to begin to approach the primary texts of postmodern theory and culture with confidence.

Excellent, short introduction which validates a critical postmodernism
By Summers Henderson
This is a very well written, concise, accessible overview of the entire debate over postmodernism. It will help the reader answer such questions as: What is postmodernism? How does it relate to postmodernity? How does it relate to modernism and modernity? How should postmodernism be judged? Malpas makes the case that we are living in a time of postmodernity marked by cultural and subjective fragmentation brought on by late capitalism. But he endorses critics such as Lyotard who find a space for a specifically postmodern, political resistance. What makes this book superlative is how wide-ranging it is, giving a concise history of modern philosophy and touching on many major thinkers and aspects of critical theory. Beside the expected Lyotard, Jameson and Baudrillard, there is also Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Freud, Lacan, Fanon, Habermas, Said, Benjamin, Derrida, Kristeva, Butler, Marxism, feminism, and anticolonialism, plus Marshall Berman, Linda Hutcheon, Donna Haraway, and a bunch of other critics of modernism and postmodernism. Sadly no Barthes or Foucault. But this book could serve as an introduction to the whole world of critical theory, as all these theorists' works are put into a context of what they have to contribute to an understanding of our contemporary, postmodern reality. I will be looking at other books in the Routledge New Critical Idiom series and hoping to find works as equally clear and accessible without being overly simplified.

Good overview. Balanced
By Matt
Malpas' discussion of the phenomenon of Postmodernism is quite well-balanced and clear. He incorporates the ideas of many of the major thinkers of the era and makes logical sense of a sometimes illogical set of ideas. Strong on Lyotard and Habermas. Much clearer than Christopher Butlers "A Very Short Introduction to Postmodernism" (OUP)

Good Introduction to and Explanation of Postmodernism
By Aaron Pogue
While it's a challengingly academic read, The Postmodern (New Critical Idiom) by Simon Malpas is an excellent introduction to and exploration of postmodernism. The book serves primarily as a review of literature, drawing upon some of the most important works in postmodern thought, and showing how each work shaped the discussion. Malpas's stated goals for the book is to demonstrate what postmodernism is, but along the way he does an admirable job highlighting its strengths and weaknesses and placing it within the contextual framework of a still quite-effective modernism and realism.

New Testament Survey, by Robert G. Gromacki

Before coming to grips with an individual verse or passage in the New Testament, Bible students and expositors must understand how it relates to the theme of the book. This nontechnical survey offers readers a working understanding of the New Testament by providing the theological tools necessary to synthesize biblical passages into themes. It incorporates historical and cultural backgrounds without becoming a book on manners and customs and deals with the actual text of Scripture without becoming a versebyverse commentary. Pictures, charts, and outlines aid comprehension. This classic text, which has served students well for many years, is now available in paperback.

Gromacki's NT Survey
By Fred W. Hayden, Jr.
Added to a collection of four other New Testament Surveys from the likes of Tenney, F.F. Bruce, and Ferguson, Gromacki's contribution to this subject is a welcome addition. I was impressed with his more than average treatment of the material considering the nature of a survey of the New Testament.

Semi-technical conservative treatment
By David A. Bayliss
This book should really be viewed as a study bible for the New Testament without the bible part! It contains sections on the authorship, setting, purpose and outline of each book in the New Testament. The treatments given are extensive; there is also a section that harmonizes the Gospels. The outlines are detailed and there is typically 5-10 lines of commentary for every chapter.

The book is fairly even handed in the treatment it gives of the various conservative opinions on controversial subjects (such as the dating of the Gospels). The more liberal opinions are mentioned but not usually taken seriously. Having discussed the various options the author usually lands on the 'standard' conservative view.

In short this book does not really break any new ground; and it isn't trying to. It is a useful compendium of 'standard' opinion. I would certainly recommend it for anyone that doesn't have a good study bible or for anyone with the interest to sit down and read cover to cover.

It can and is used for a number of degree level courses although frankly I don't think it contains anything that would prove difficult for the casual but interested reader.

A great help!
By Sabertooth
I really like Gromacki's book. He does an excellent job of hitting the high points of the N.T. This is not a complete commentary, if thats what you're looking for, but I didn't expect it to be. I used this to help teach a N.T. survey class in our Bible Institute. Good stuff.
