800 Pages of Ideas, Tips, Scripts

This is a very large book, covering a lot of ground. In the Acknowledgments section, the author points out that this is NOT the work of just one person--a lot of folks were involved in creating and proofing this reference book. If you have ever written a large technical book, you will realize the challenge in creating such a work--it is very tough.

When reading a book like this, I try to be open to new ways to do things, rather than saying, "That's not how I would do it." If you ask 10 DBAs how to do something, they will each have a different slant on things. Of course, there are going to be areas where the reader might very well have a better way of doing something than the author suggests. On the other hand, I am sure I will find scripts and ideas that the author does better than I do. When I find them, I will incorporate them into my own "tool kit." Some notes:

* In most chapters, there are various little tip sidebars that offer some quick tips or rules of thumb. For example on page 297, Don has a side bar explaining "Mutex latches."
* I especially liked Don's section on the philosophy of rebuilding indexes. Like the author, I like the "pragmatic approach."
* The author points out the absurdity of Oracle claiming that 11g had completed automated performance tuning. Did anyone actually believe that?

Minior nit-pick: Some of the illustrations seem a little on the fuzzy side. Still readable, but not clear. For example, Figures 4.4, 4.5, 12.5, 12.6

Overall, I found this book to be well-organized, and clearly written. There are small sections devoted to changes in 12c, but it appears that most of the scripts will run, with perhaps slight changes, from Oracle 10g to 12. I found that using the Table of Contents, rather than the index, is the best way to home-in on an area of interest.

It covers subjects like the 80/20 rule

I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review.

What a neat little book! The book itself measures 5x5 inches and is about 1 inch thick! It is packed with information.

I really didn't know what to expect with this book, or if I could decipher the information within it to give it a fair and accurate review. I have an interest in design, but, no connection professionally with it, or so I thought.

The book is largely devoted to perception, and how to create it to get the desired perception. It covers subjects like the 80/20 rule, Classical Conditioning and Horror Vacui; (as a formal retail manager of a clothing store, I now understand why store executives made certain choices based on price points). This a only a small list of the principles contained in the book.

The book is illustrated for each subject explained. Which I found extremely helpful and enlightening.

I think this would be a valuable resource/ reference book for anyone who is interested in design on any scale. From creating electronics, retail spaces, to home design, the principles contained within the book could be used for any of this purposes. I think an artist working with anything from pencils to photography or even graphic design could gain a bunch of insight from the book as well. I know I did.

Excellent design resource!

This small yet thick book would make an excellent gift for anyone involved in designing things for a living or as an avocation, visually or otherwise, both as an introduction or refresher. These principles often concern issues of communication and persuasion, so I believe it could be very beneficial for anyone involved in marketing or advertising as well. It names a principle, gives illuminating visual examples, and clearly describes it in brief text. Each principle is described in a few paragraphs on each little two-page spread.

I think that by reading (or revisiting) these well-described concepts, one would develop Depth of Processing (“Thinking hard about a thing improves the likelihood that it can be recalled.”) and avoid the Dunning-Kruger Effect (“A tendency for unskilled people to overestimate their competence and performance.”). Even though I’ve been designing professionally for many years, I find myself turning to this exceptionally helpful book, over and over again.

Well designed book that gives me some basic design knowledge and understanding.

Excellent book and reference for a "jack of all trades". I love that the book covers several areas of design, including both visual and functional aspects. It is conveniently sized, and of course...well designed.

Personally, I play with everything from designing parts and tools to build/repair cars to graphic design to home organization/building projects. I outsource my "real" design work to professionals, but it is still great to understand some of these principles when reviewing their work.

About the Author
Al Santini has over 35 years of experience teaching automotive electronics, including 22 years as an instructor at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Mr. Santini currently teaches technician classes on vehicle emissions, including OBD-II. In addition to holding a master's degree in technical education and ASE certification, he is an active member of the Society of Automotive Testers (SAT), the Illinois College Automotive Instructor's Association (ICAIA) and the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT), where he has been a member for 28 years.

Best Automotive Electronics book you will ever find.

I bought this book almost 5 years ago while in Auto tech school to supplement a lousy text we had to use in our auto electronics class.
This book is excellent in the way it presents the subject matter; also covers 'scope useage in a clear and understandable matter.
I looked a several books before buying this one; it had all the details and material that I was needing.
If you are wanting a deep understanding of automotive electronics and has to test and repair today's complex vehicles, this is the book to buy.
I finished my automotive program 3 years ago and have advanced to Master ASE certified with L1. This book gave me the foundation and understanding of electronic systems that I needed to build upon.
Get this book and you will not be disappointed.

Pretty good...................BUT!

I like the way this book is written....clear explanations with a lot of good examples.

I have found quite a few mistakes throughout this book....kinda scratch my head wondering how the editors miss them.

Most of the mistakes are made when the book references one of the wiring diagrams/schematics. For example, on page 471 the diagram (56-2) shows a non-ganged switch (should have dashed-line ganging)........ one page later it refers to the diagram and emphasizes the switches as being ganged.

On page 493 the book refers to figure 59-6 and states that the test light should come on if connected to yellow and drk-green or gray.....seeing that yellow is hot and the other wires are resting in the grounded position. Trouble is, the switches at rest, according to the diagram, put the switches at hot......and yellow is also hot, that means no test light should come on. The switches in question actually show that a ground is applied when thrown.

I ran into this type of error quite a few times in this otherwise well-written book.

While military solutions to social problems take an awful toll in human suffering, the military's gain in wealth and power is apt to make it reluctant to support peace unless funds are cut off. Tiny, overpopulated El Salvador has recently emerged from a savage 13-year civil war that devastated the country. The war, in reality an agrarian movement to rectify the ownership of over half the land by two percent of the people, gave rise to such human rights abuses that thousands were massacred or fled abroad. Protests by women in turn made them aware of their own status as a disadvantaged group. The author herself was transformed from a peasant to an international human rights activist. Those who know Latin America will not be surprised at her story; a similar story is Nidia Diaz's I Was Never Alone: A Prison Diary from El Salvador (Ocean, 1992). For large collections.

Courageous woman uncovers torture, coverups and femicide

While the summary gives away some hints of the book there is a lot more to be covered specifically how Maria Tulsa uncovers how much of the torture, murders and government terrorism in El Salvador was aided by the United States. That's probably what people should focus on the most. Even in today's age the hypocritical points the finger at Iraq and other countries for sponsoring terrorism yet has aided terrorism and dictatorships in places like Argentina, Guatemala, Chile, Nicaragua (Samoza dynasty) and many more country.

Some things never change. Anyhow, as mentioned Maria herself is born not just from a poor family but a poor crazy family. Her mother and father are simply terrible cruel parents who don't give her daughter anything, her siblings abuse her and low and behold it's her Grandmother who is the only person that Maria can honestly call a relative.

Later on she marries, and her husband is murdered by the government and labeled as a terrorist for striking. Maria can't even find her husband's dead body to claim (something that happened in other countries like Argentina where the government exterminated thousands of people yet wouldn't even tell loved ones where their victims bodies where). Simply disgusting. Maria's story is very familiar to people who have done research and have lived through this sort of thing.

She didn't just become a victim but an activist starting the Co-Madres group. Her story is sad but inspirational it really deserves more attention than just the three reviews here on Amazon.com

this book should be read by any person of domestic violence,

this is the best book i have ever read. it is very exicting and uplifting. Maria Tula is one of the most courageous individuals i have read about. being a woman i want to use maria as a model for myself and my future daughters. any one who has experiecned domestic violence should read this book because she expereinced and overcame it. please read and recommend this book to women and men.

Great Recorder Book!

When I purchased this book, I also purchased the book titled, "Recorder Fun! Teach Yourself the Easy Way!". I like both books for different reasons. This book shows music exactly as it would appear in other actual sheet music that one would use to perform with. The other book shows the name of the notes on each individual note, which helps one to memorize them. This book shows the picture of the recorder from the top to the bottom, and the other book shows the picture of the recorder from bottom to top. Each book contains different songs from the other (which is nice), and each book contains songs with only the notes that have been learned up to that point (which again, is great). Both books also contain lyrics, where appropriate, which are nice for those who want to do duets, trios, etc. This book also gives a 1 page illustration and descriptions of the entire family of recorders, which the other book does not offer. The other book does, however, come with a CD that properly demonstrates how all of the songs in the book should be played, which is a wonderful bonus for those who plan to play the recorder as more than a hobby. Overall I am happy that I decided to purchase both books together. It seems that what one book leaves out, the other one includes - which is why I recommend purchasing both books together.

Nice way to teach your child to play (price is terrific, too!).

I am using this to refresh my own memory from third grade and to teach my eight-year-old daughter to play. I am very impressed with the way they focus on one note at a time yet manage to pull some songs together so you feel like you're really playing something special vs. just doing a bunch of exercises. By the second lesson, we were playing together.

We have both been amused by the song lyrics, and we are sharing lots of laughs in the process, which is of course priceless.

They also include some parts for a teacher (if one is available), so you can play duets. This has also been a fun feature for us since I already know how to play.

One thing beginners should pay attention to is the timing. As they teach you notes (A,B, C, etc.), they also teach you the aspect of timing (which of course is essential). Be sure to learn that part of the lesson also.

It cost less than $30 for two recorders and this book. For that price, we are making memories and building the foundation for a lifetime of musical enjoyment. You simply can't go wrong with this book.

We got this along with a few recorders for our children. They love this book. They have learned songs easily. I would recommend this for beginners. My children are 3, 10, and 13.

This incident was a tragedy however I don't think arming teachers with guns is the answer. Although, I have not finished the book yet, but so far this is all that it is saying. There needs to more money put into mental illness.

I've Been Duped!

What?! You mean it's not a children's book? It has stick figures on the cover. I bought it for my niece for her birthday.

Since the number of incidences of school shootings in Great Britain and Japan are much, much lower than they are here, I can only assume that the populaces of those two countries are armed to the teeth. Should I ever decide to travel abroad, I'll consider one (or both) of those two places -- knowing that I'll be protected by multitudes of responsible gun owners.

I don't agree with the books suggestion that we lay bear traps and land mines around the school to ward off crazed gunmen. It also suggested arming teachers with M-29 Davy Crockett tactical nuke mortars which I found a bit extreme.
