About the Author
Richard L. Matteson Jr. is nationally recognized for his books, magazine articles and workshops on classical and fingerstyle guitar. He is president of the Piedmont Classic Guitar Society and has given workshops and performances at the Merle Watson Memorial Festival in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention in Nashville. Matteson was commissioned by the Hendersonville Symphony to write two pieces for classic guitar and strings that were premiered in 1994. His string quartets and string quartet and guitar piece were performed in the 1991 PCGS Concert Series. An active performer, Richard resides in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he directs guitar studies at Winston-Salem State University. He is also a full-time music teacher at Pearson Music Co. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Lots of Tunes for the $$$ !

This book was better than I expected. The transcriptions are fairly accurate and there's a variety of tunes.

It is what it is

This is basically a fake book of traditional tunes. It has standard notation and chord symbols. The nice thing about it is that it gives the history of each tune, who first recorded it and other famous artists that have done their versions of it too. It's a winner.
That's sad that someone gave this book a 1 star review because they can't read music. That's like disliking a novel because you can't read. What did you expect? If you want to be a musician learn the language.

Notes, lyrics, chords and notation for over 200 favorite songs

Richard L. Matteson Jr. is a dedicated author and teacher, most known for his books, articles and workshops on fingerstyle guitar. From Winston-Salem, N.C., the president of the Piedmont Classic Guitar Society is also an active performer and director of guitar studies at Winston-Salem State University. He created The Bluegrass Messengers as a vehicle for his students to gain performance experience.
Seeing a need for a songbook that includes notes, lyrics, chords and standard notation, Matteson compiled over 200 favorite bluegrass and gospel songs. Some are also considered old-time (Hog-Eyed Man, Girl I Left Behind Me, Sally Ann, Arkansas Traveler, Skillet Good and Greasy). Matteson even includes his own "Bluegrass Boogie." The 247-page Bluegrass Picker's Tune Book easily meets a need for repertoire, emphasizing many songs that date back to the turn of the century and including info on their origin, dating and references for recorded versions. Large print for the lyrics also make them easy to read. While some are certainly included (e.g. Goin' Down This Road Feelin' Bad), the many hits of Bill Monroe, Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, and other bluegrass luminaries are noticeably absent. Matteson says that it was difficult just to pick 213 songs, and he may produce a supplemental volume. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
