Fabulous Frommer's Frolics

I discovered Frommer's 24 Great Walks in Paris last summer when I was in Paris for the umpteenth time. This book is great for those who have both been to Paris before and for newcomers. The walks allow you to explore Paris at your own pace, stopping at the major attractions and notable spots. As others have noted the Art Nouveau walk is a little bit disappointing, but I found every walk to be enjoyable and taught me something new about the City of Lights. For those who do not like to herded around in tour groups, this is an excellent alternative that allows you to "self-guide" through the streets of Paris. Do keep in mind that not every street is shown on the map, only the major ones, so you will want to use the guide in tandem with a more detailed map, like Paris Pratique.

Right direction, but doesn't deliver

I love to walk so at first browse I thought this book would be perfect. It contains interesting information and lovely pictures but I found errors on maps, listings for sites that no longer exist, and information is lacking that would be useful such as hours of operation for sites. For instance, we arrived at a graveyard just as it was closing, and frankly it seemed a little early in the day for a graveyard to be closing so these hours would have been useful to have in advance of embarking on the walk. Frankly, it became a bit of a joke between me and my travel companion. We'd start a walk, get frustrated with the book, I'd put it away and we'd just find our own way through neighborhoods and sites. Overall, the book pointed me in the right direction but it didn't quite deliver.

Great guide for a first trip to Paris - or a second or third
By Reading as Much as I Can
If you've been to Paris a few times, you've probably done all these walks - but you might not have known everything you were looking at along the way, so it's a great read even after you've been to Paris.
OTOH, if you're looking to gift someone who is going to Paris soon as a first or second timer, this is a great and useful gift, and they will probably take it with them.
